Conference Photography at the Gaylord Rockies Resort | Aurora CO
The Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center in Aurora, Colorado is one of the most impressive event venues in the Rocky Mountain region — and one of our favorite places to shoot. With nearly 500,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a dramatic 75-foot Grand Lodge atrium window framing the Rocky Mountains, and a brand-new Mountain View Pavilion with floor-to-ceiling west-facing glass, this venue gives us the kind of architectural variety and natural light that makes conference photography genuinely exciting.
We’ve photographed everything here — from multi-day national conferences with thousands of attendees to intimate corporate retreats and holiday celebrations. Our team knows the layout, the lighting quirks, the best angles in every ballroom, and exactly where to position for keynotes in the Aurora Ballroom versus breakout sessions in the upper-level meeting rooms.
The Gaylord Rockies itself has been a valued client of From the Hip Photo, and we’ve been documenting this magnificent venue since construction first began. Beyond the Gaylord, we’re proud to serve as the official photographers for Visit Aurora, capturing their annual visitor guide and the city’s major events year after year. This depth of local experience and long-standing partnerships allows us to bring an insider’s perspective to every project we photograph here.
Diverse spaces, diverse shots. The Gaylord’s 485,000 square feet include everything from the 47,000-square-foot Aurora Ballroom (which seats nearly 5,000) down to intimate boardroom-style meeting rooms. That range means we’re constantly shifting between wide-angle stage coverage, tight keynote speaker portraits, candid hallway conversations, and detailed exhibit hall documentation — all in the same building.

Why the Gaylord Rockies Is a Photographer’s Dream Venue
Not all convention centers are created equal from a photography standpoint. The Gaylord Rockies stands out for several reasons that directly impact the quality of event photography:
Natural light everywhere. The 75-foot Grand Lodge atrium window is the showpiece — it floods the central gathering areas with soft, even light that’s perfect for candid networking shots. The new Mountain View Pavilion, which opened in 2024, faces west with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Rocky Mountain foothills. During afternoon and evening events, the golden hour light streaming through those windows creates a backdrop that most venues simply can’t match.

Indoor-outdoor flexibility. The Mountain View Pavilion opens onto 14,000 square feet of terraces and patios, plus a 15,000-square-foot turfed lawn. The Aurora Patio adds another 22,000 square feet of outdoor event space. For conferences that include receptions, team-building activities, or evening social events, these outdoor areas give us gorgeous mountain-backdrop photography opportunities without ever leaving the venue.
Colorado-inspired design details. From cascading waterfalls over natural boulders to mine-shaft-themed elevators and local artwork throughout, the Gaylord’s interior design tells a distinctly Colorado story. These details add richness and sense of place to event photography — attendees aren’t just at “a conference,” they’re at a conference in the Rocky Mountains.

What We Cover at the Gaylord Rockies
Every event is different, but our Gaylord Rockies coverage typically includes some combination of the following:
Keynote and general session photography. The Aurora Ballroom’s massive stage and dramatic lighting setups make for compelling speaker portraits. We know exactly where to position for clean sight lines in that room — and when to shift angles as the lighting changes between presentations.

Breakout sessions and workshops. With 78+ meeting rooms spread across multiple levels, we coordinate multi-photographer coverage to capture concurrent sessions without missing key moments. We’ve learned which rooms have the best natural light and which require a different approach.
Exhibit halls and sponsor activations. Booth photography, product demonstrations, sponsor signage, and the general energy of a busy expo floor. We capture both the wide establishing shots that show scale and the close-up details that sponsors need for their own marketing.
Networking and candid moments. The Grand Lodge atrium, restaurant spaces, and outdoor terraces are where the real relationship-building happens between sessions. We move through these areas throughout the day capturing authentic interactions — the handshakes, the laughing conversations, the impromptu whiteboard sessions.

Headshot stations. We frequently set up professional headshot stations at Gaylord Rockies conferences, offering attendees complimentary or included headshots during registration or break periods. Our virtual queue system keeps the line moving and eliminates bottlenecks.
Evening events and galas. Holiday parties, awards dinners, themed receptions — the Gaylord’s event spaces transform beautifully for evening programming, and we adjust our approach accordingly with off-camera lighting and a focus on atmosphere.
